In collaboration with the International Livestock Research Institute, VCKON3T has launched a new decision support tool called MaDE-IT—short for Marek’s Disease Economic-Impact and Trade-off. This tool is designed to help layer poultry producers in Ghana effectively plan, prepare for, and invest in strategies to control Marek’s disease.

This research article led by our board of director,  Dr Joshua Aboah, recommends the promotion of coordinated on-farm diversification and domestic cocoa processing to strengthen value chain resilience. Policymakers should support cocoa farmers to diversify production using variable inputs while simultaneously creating an enabling environment for greater in-country processing. Given the shared cocoa market between Ghana and Côte d' Ivoire, regional coordination on forward integration strategies could further strengthen resilience. Policies should also encourage processors to maintain adequate safety stocks, particularly during periods of declining cocoa production, to reduce supply disruptions.


Key policy message: Supporting farmer diversification and expanding domestic processing can make Ghana’s cocoa value chain more resilient to production shocks, regardless of Côte d’Ivoire’s forward integration strategy.
